Kacey Musgraves to Release New 16-Song Album, ‘Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes’

Kacey Musgraves, the Grammy-winning country artist, has teased her next album, Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes, set to be released on January 15 via Lost Highway Records. This 16-track album features 11 original compositions and five covers, expanding upon the themes of solitude, contentment, and self-assurance from her previous album, Middle of Nowhere.

The forthcoming release includes two new songs, "Weekend in Texas" and "Mi Tesoro," both of which provide an early taste of the Tex-Mex musical influences that define the project. Four tracks on Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2 are sung entirely in Spanish, with one of these tracks being a reimagined version of "Uncertain, TX" featuring Tejano/norteño group Intocable. The album also includes a cover of Freddy Fender's classic 1974 hit "Before the Next Teardrop Falls."

In addition to the new material, the album carries on the Texan-Mexican musical fusion that Musgraves has explored since Middle of Nowhere, which initially incorporated elements of Tejano, norteño, and cumbia. Her previous album, Star-Crossed (2021), showcased this blend with covers of Spanish-language folk standards, and Musgraves has also paid tribute to Tejano legend Selena Quintanilla in live performances and collaborations with Carín León on "Lost In Translation."

Musgraves is currently a strong contender for the upcoming Country Music Association (CMA) Awards in November. She has been nominated for five awards, including female vocalist of the year, album of the year for Middle of Nowhere, song of the year, music video of the year (for "Dry Spell"), and musical event of the year (for "Horses and Divorces" with Miranda Lambert). The CMA Awards are scheduled to air on ABC and Disney+ from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on November 18.
