HD Hyundai Heavy Industries unveiled the world's largest ammonia-powered vessel, the Terra Clove, at its Ulsan shipyard on October 22. Measuring 230 meters in length and 36.5 meters in width, the 93,000-cubic-meter carrier is the first of two sister ships ordered by Singapore-based EPS in 2023. The name Terra Clove, a combination of the Latin word for earth and flower bud, reflects the ship's environmentally friendly values.

Around 110 officials, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Vice Chairman and Head Lee Sang-kyun, EPS CEO Cyril Ducau, and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore Chairman Loh Koon Yen, attended the naming ceremony to celebrate the launch of the new vessel. The Terra Clove's ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system enables the ship to selectively use conventional marine fuel oil or ammonia, an eco-friendly fuel, depending on the operating conditions.

Advanced disaster-prevention technologies, such as a real-time ammonia leak detection device and an emission reduction system, ensure safety on board, addressing the biggest challenge for ammonia-powered ships. The vessel's transport capacity and efficiency have been maximized, with four in-house-designed cargo tanks allowing the ship to transport ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) simultaneously.

It also features a shaft generator that produces electricity using the propulsion engine's rotating shaft, along with systems to reduce nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, enhancing its compliance with environmental regulations.

Through the construction of the Terra Clove, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries showcased its technological prowess in the ammonia-powered ship sector. In April, the company delivered the world's first 46,000-cubic-meter medium-sized ammonia-powered gas carrier. At the naming ceremony, Lee Sang-kyun stated, "It is an honor to have built next-generation eco-friendly ships together with EPS, adding, 'The construction of this world's largest ammonia-powered vessel is an important step forward toward the decarbonization of shipping.'"

After completing the final outfitting work, Terra Clove is set to be delivered to shipowner EPS in early November.
