Doha, Qatar - Qatar Museums (QM) has appointed renowned Nigerian curator Azu Nwagbogu as the Artistic Director of Tasweer 2027, the fourth edition of the country's photography biennial. This marks the first time the event will be presented under QM's future Art Mill Museum.
Nwagbogu's appointment comes just after the biennial's three previous editions, which were all conceived by women - Charlotte Cotton in 2021 and 2023, and Meriem Berrada in 2025. Catherine Grenier, Director of Concept of Art Mill Museum, expressed her excitement at welcoming Nwagbogu to the role, highlighting his international experience and network as assets to the upcoming event.
Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director of Tasweer 2027, also welcomed Nwagbogu, noting his unique perspective rooted in his connections in the Global South and Africa. He believes Nwagbogu's vision will shape a fascinating and engaging fourth edition of the biennial, celebrating photographers and visual storytellers from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
Nwagbogu himself expressed his honor at taking on the role, acknowledging the strong foundation laid by previous artistic directors. He emphasized the importance of Tasweer in engaging with the changing visual language in our world, using images with ethical and intellectual courage.
