Osun Sensitises Transport Operators on New Law, Targets Multiple Taxation
Yinka Kolawole in Osogbo The Osun State Government on Wednesday sensitised transport operators, vehicle owners, drivers, riders and other stakeholders on the state’s Integrated Transport, Traffic and Park Management System
On Wednesday, the Osun State Government educated transport operators, vehicle owners, drivers, riders, and other stakeholders about the state's Integrated Transport, Traffic and Park Management System Law 2026. The primary focus of the sensitisation was on reducing multiple taxation, stopping illegal collections, and enhancing road safety.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Transportation, gathered transport union leaders, park managers, commercial vehicle operators, government officials, and other stakeholders to clarify the law's provisions and the roles and responsibilities under the new transport management system. Accounting Officer Olumide Taiwo explained that the law aimed to create a more organized, transparent, and technology-driven transport system, emphasizing that the session was to ensure participants understood both their obligations and the benefits available to them.
The new framework involves registering and identifying commercial operators and vehicles, using approved parks and loading points, displaying number plates correctly, conducting roadworthiness checks, and implementing traffic management through technology. This includes electronic identification, QR and NFC credentials, digital payment records, cameras, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems, all aimed at verifying and enforcing compliance.
The Ministry highlighted that the Daily Operation Levy would be tied to verified commercial operations, distinguishing between operating days and inactivity to mitigate arbitrary assessments and multiple collections. Acting Chairman of the Osun Internal Revenue Service, Solanke Hamzat, emphasized that the reform aligns with efforts to simplify and make tax administration more transparent while tackling multiple taxation.
He noted that the new system would streamline revenue collection, block leakages, and prevent ticket duplication, ensuring that digital payment records and official receipts protect operators and eliminate repeated demands for payment. According to Hamzat, the law is already effective, and commercial vehicle operators must register within 60 days of the governor signing it into law.
