Legora raises fresh $550m at $8.8bn valuation

Swedish legal AI startup Legora has raised $550 million in its Series E funding round, pushing its valuation to $8.8 billion. The round was led by Boston-based investment firm Atreides Management and included new investors such as Baron Capital, Capital Group, Fidelity, Glade Brook Capital Partners, and JP Morgan. Existing investors Accel, Benchmark, Bessemer Venture Partners, General Catalyst, Iconiq, Insight Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and Sands Capital also participated.

Legora's AI technology assists lawyers in researching, reviewing, and drafting legal work, competing with US rival Harvey. The company said its technology is meeting the growing demand as legal teams move from AI assistants to AI agents that handle multi-step tasks. In-house legal teams, which made up a small portion of Legora's customer base a year ago, now account for over 40% of new customers in the third quarter. The US has become Legora's biggest market.

The company plans to use the raised funds to expand in North America, with offices in major cities across the continent, as well as to further develop its agentic operating system. Legora's CEO and co-founder, Max Junestrand, expressed confidence in the future, stating that the opportunity in the legal industry is immense and the company is still in the early stages.

Junestrand emphasized that AI is transforming the role of lawyers, allowing them more time for judgment and advice, and reshaping how law firms and in-house legal teams operate and work. The company chose its investors for their long-term perspective and understanding of building a lasting company.
