Lee meets with WHO chief to discuss cooperation in healthcare

President Lee Jae Myung held a meeting with the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Wednesday to explore avenues for increased collaboration in the healthcare sector. The discussion took place at Cheong Wa Dae, as Tedros was in Seoul to attend the World Bio Summit 2026, an event hosted jointly by WHO and South Korea on Wednesday and Thursday.

President Lee highlighted the importance of enhancing South Korea's role and contributions to the global community during the meeting. Presidential spokesperson Kim Sung-wan conveyed this sentiment in a written briefing. Lee expressed optimism that Seoul would continue to strengthen its partnership with WHO, particularly in the realm of health security.

In his request to Tedros, President Lee aimed to facilitate the flow of highly skilled South Korean professionals to the organization. He noted that South Korea has evolved from being a recipient of international aid to a significant contributor. Tedros acknowledged South Korea's efforts in bolstering cooperation with WHO and promoting global health, expressing appreciation for the country's development achievements.

Tedros emphasized the significance of equitable healthcare access for all, thanking South Korea for its commitment to this cause.
