The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has committed to supporting the formalization of the province's informal gems trade. The aim is to promote value addition and eliminate business obstacles that hinder local gemstones and jewelry from competing on the global stage. Dr. Muhammad Irshad, a member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advisory Council for Industries, Commerce and Technical Education, affirmed this commitment during a meeting with a delegation from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Gems and Jewellery Association (KPGJA).
The KPGJA delegation was led by its president, Muhammad Salman Niazi, who was accompanied by officials from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Board of Investment and Trade (KP BOIT).
The meeting focused on discussing the challenges faced by the province's gems and jewelry businesses. These challenges included transitioning the informal trade into the formal economy, enhancing foreign exchange earnings, and promoting exports in line with international standards. Dr. Irshad stated that the government, in collaboration with KP BOIT, would take measures to assist businesses, encourage value addition, and overcome trade-related barriers. Their goal is to enhance the competitiveness of local products in international markets.
Niazi further disclosed that the KPGJA delegation would travel to Germany to participate in an international exhibition that would display gemstones and traditional jewelry from the province. He added that three members of the association had already arrived in Germany three days prior to arrange for the delegation's participation.
