Italy’s Generative Bionics, AMD team up to train European humanoids

Italian humanoid developer Generative Bionics is partnering with chipmaker AMD to build "Europe's largest" physical AI data factory, aiming to advance the region's humanoid sovereignty. The initiative will ensure that data, models and know-how behind Europe's industrial humanoids are generated, trained and validated on the continent.

The first 5,000 sq metre hub in Italy is expected to become operational by late 2027, followed by additional facilities in Europe and global markets. Founded in 2024 by researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology, Generative Bionics manufactures humanoids for tasks in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and retail. The company launched in late 2025 with a €70m seed round led by CDP Venture Capital, with participation from AMD Ventures, Duferco, Eni Next, RoboIT and Tether.

AMD will power the factory's data network with its Helios rack-scale AI infrastructure. The new facility will replicate industrial environments for Gene.01, a "fully functional smart-skin" humanoid robot, enabling continuous task performance and data generation for digital-twin simulations. Despite a 272% increase in humanoid sales, Europe holds a fraction of China's market share in the humanoid robot market, with China capturing over 97% of the market and accounting for more than 85% of global demand.

Agibot, a Shanghai-based producer, is the world's largest humanoid robot vendor, holding 44% of the global market and 75% of sales worldwide.
