Grotesque Engagement Farmers Are Using AI to Manipulate Real Arrest Footage So That Cops Grope Women

Farmers on the social media platform TikTok are employing artificial intelligence to tamper with genuine arrest footage. The objective behind this manipulation is to showcase police officers engaging in acts of kissing and groping individuals who are being taken into custody. The disturbing nature of these deepfakes was identified by Copyleaks.

The AI-altered videos are fashioned from authentic footage of arrests, which were initially recorded for reality television shows such as TLC’s "D.U.I.", but have since been altered to depict law enforcement officers kissing and touching real women and men during arrest. The arrested individuals are often depicted wearing handcuffs and positioned near, in, or against police cars while the fabricated sexual activity unfolds.

These malicious deepfakes are then inserted before longer videos of the arrest, a tactic designed to captivate users' attention and sustain engagement on the platform.

Alon Yamin, Copyleaks's co-founder and CEO, emphasized the unsettling aspect of AI tools being utilized to fabricate deepfake versions of real content, specifically to boost attention and engagement on social media. He underlined the importance of acknowledging that these videos feature actual people - both law enforcement officers and citizens - being depicted in scenarios that never transpired.

Some of the videos display the individuals being kissed and groped appearing to be enthusiastic participants in the sexual advances of the arresting officers. Nonetheless, the disclaimer indicating that the clips are intended for "entertainment use only with no harmful implication" is highly deceptive. The creation of sexualized deepfakes, which involve manipulating media of real people without their consent, inherently constitutes a harmful act.

Following our inquiry, TikTok promptly removed instances of the flagged content and provided us with their platform guidelines concerning the explicit labeling of realistic AI content.
