Grateful for midnight air raids
Whenever I have any occasion to mingling at a U.S. Air Force (USAF) event or with its airmen, it reminds me of a critical blessing to members of my family — composed of my great grandmother, grandparents, parents and five siblings — 76 years ago, during August of 1950. During the Korean War, in the summer of 1950, my family endured a harrowing time. My great-grandmother, grandparents, parents, and five siblings found themselves in Seoul when it was seized by North Korean forces. Amidst the chaos, I vividly remember the thunderous U.S. airstrikes that pursued the enemy troops.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the 79th USAF Ball hosted by the Korea-America Association (KAA) at Lotte Hotel World. Under the command of Lt. Gen. David G. Shoemaker, around 500 military and civilian attendees gathered to celebrate. On another occasion, I joined a sightseeing trip to Osan Air Base in May 2019, led by then-Commander Kenneth WIlsbach and joined by 24 fellow KAA members.
Reflecting on these experiences, I am deeply grateful for the air raids that took place during the darkest hours of our family's history. They provided a sense of hope and protection, ensuring our safety and preserving our freedom.
