The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly recently disbursed a total of GH¢680,084.25 in disability funds to support 208 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and associations within the metropolis. The funding, which covers the third and fourth quarters of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, aims to empower beneficiaries through economic empowerment, education, healthcare, and organizational development.
The majority of the funds, amounting to GH¢340,042.13, were allocated to economic empowerment initiatives. This includes the purchase of various equipment such as cassava processing machines, pressure washers, deep-freezers, sewing machines, and milling machines to facilitate income-generating activities. Additionally, GH¢132,000 was provided as cash support for 61 beneficiaries to engage in income-generating activities.
The assembly also allocated GH¢102,000 towards supporting 47 beneficiaries with medical needs, while GH¢68,000 was set aside for education, training, and skills development for 42 individuals. The distribution of funds also covered 10 per cent for advocacy, organizational development, and support for organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), as well as five per cent for administrative costs.
Mr. George Justice Arthur, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, emphasized that economic empowerment received the largest share of the funds, representing 50 percent of the total allocation. He expressed confidence that the assembly would monitor the usage of funds and ensure they are utilized strictly for their intended purpose, warning against any attempts to sell the equipment provided.
The assembly also pledged to promptly disburse future disability funds to improve the economic wellbeing and reduce the vulnerability of PWDs in the metropolis.
