BBC slashes 100 jobs, closes two channels

On Tuesday, the BBC announced over 100 job cuts and the closure of two channels as it seeks to save 500 million pounds ($668 million) over the next two years. BBC News disclosed the "net closure of just over 100 roles," which accounts for 5.5 million pounds in savings. Director Rachel Jupp, who took the position this month following her predecessor's resignation over a controversial documentary edit, made the announcement.

In addition to job losses, the BBC will discontinue BBC Scotland and BBC Three, channels that will now be accessible only on its online iPlayer streaming platform. Radio 4 Extra will also be closed, with its archive-based programs now available on BBC Sounds, an audio-streaming platform. BBC Director General Matt Brittin emphasized the need to make every pound work harder for audiences as the corporation responds to cost pressures and reinvents itself for a changing world.

Scottish culture minister Mairi McAllan criticized the move to move BBC Scotland online as "wholly unacceptable." In June, the BBC announced plans to cut another 550 roles in its news, nations, and content teams by the end of the financial year, aiming to save 160 million pounds. The BBC's financial struggles have been exacerbated by a 25% decline in income from the license fee since 2017, which it largely relies on.

The broadcaster, which claims to be consumed by 94% of UK adults monthly, has faced numerous controversies and scandals that have eroded public confidence. Jupp noted that the BBC's news service may need to save even more than initially planned due to the corporation's financial pressures.
