Absa Place achieves IFC EDGE Advanced Green Building Certification
Absa Bank Ghana LTD’s new headquarters, Absa Place, has achieved EDGE Advanced certification from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), recognising the building’s high standards of energy and water efficiency.
Absa Bank Ghana LTD's new headquarters, Absa Place, in Accra has earned the International Finance Corporation's (IFC) EDGE Advanced green building certification. This certification recognizes the building's exceptional energy and water efficiency. Absa Place, situated at 64 Independence Avenue in Ridge, incorporates state-of-the-art infrastructure within a modern workplace designed for employees, clients, and visitors.
Developed by the IFC, the EDGE certification system evaluates improvements in energy use, water consumption, and the carbon footprint of construction materials compared to standard building practices. EDGE Advanced certification signifies a substantially higher level of resource efficiency than regular EDGE certification.
Absa Bank Ghana LTD Managing Director, Dr Edward Nartey Botchway, highlighted that the certification confirms the bank's dedication to infrastructure that ensures long-term operational efficiency. He expressed that Absa Place is not merely a larger building but one that will remain efficient and relevant for the next two decades. He further stated that the EDGE Advanced certification serves as an independent validation of the bank's environmental standards for the building.
IFC praised the significance of Absa Bank Ghana's investment, commenting that the inauguration of Absa Place epitomizes the bank's long-standing commitment to Ghana and confidence in its future. By achieving the EDGE Advanced certification, Absa demonstrates that sustainability can drive both competitiveness and long-term value creation.
This achievement sets a strong benchmark for green buildings in Ghana and illustrates how the private sector can contribute to more resource-efficient and resilient urban growth across Africa, according to Deo Onyango, Principal Country Officer for IFC Ghana.
The EDGE Advanced certification bolsters Absa Bank Ghana LTD's ongoing efforts to enhance the environmental performance of its operations. The bank has invested in renewable energy, energy and water efficiency, and waste reduction. For instance, in 2025, Absa operated 54 solar-powered automated teller machines that generated approximately one million kilowatt-hours of clean energy each year.
Absa Place features a 570-kilowatt peak solar installation aimed at supplying at least 80% of the bank's on-site power needs. Additionally, the building employs a water-cooled chiller system, which is more energy-efficient than conventional air-cooled systems, and its glass façade blocks more than 70% of external heat before it enters the interior.
The workplace layout combines collaborative spaces with quiet areas, silent pods, and booths to accommodate various working styles. It also incorporates a rooftop events area, gym, auditorium, and a dedicated space for nursing mothers, further illustrating the bank's commitment to a modern, responsible workplace.
