An ambitious gun rights advocate named Cody Wilson has introduced "GatGPT," an artificial intelligence that can generate designs for firearms. This AI tool is built upon a massive online library of digital guns and gun parts called DEFCAD, which was also created by Wilson. The AI is capable of answering any question related to firearms and selecting appropriate components for gun assembly, even for those with limited knowledge of firearms terminology.

Wilson argues that his creation is not an AI-generated gun, but rather an AI that can generate guns, potentially lowering the barrier to entry for individuals to design and manufacture their own firearms. The tool, named WASP, is not currently required to have a serial number, similar to other homemade firearms known as "ghost guns," which lack government oversight and cannot be easily traced.

Critics argue that Wilson's AI gunsmith tool could significantly escalate the production of these unregulated firearms, making them more accessible to individuals without proper background checks or legal eligibility. Recent legal challenges have attempted to restrict the proliferation of these DIY weapons, with some restrictions focusing on the requirement for serial numbers and background checks for 3D-printed gun kits and parts.
