Virgil van Dijk's costly mistake stunned Anfield during Liverpool's Champions League encounter against Villarreal. The Reds, seeking to build momentum following their weekend Premier League win over Brentford, found themselves on the back foot from the outset. A misplaced headed back-pass from the captain was intercepted by Villarreal's Georges Mikautadze, who swiftly converted into the opening goal.
Van Dijk has endured more error-induced scoring opportunities (four) than any other Liverpool player since the beginning of 2025. While there remains ample time for Liverpool to regain control, their shaky start left a lasting impression.
