British fighter jets are set to aid Saudi Arabia in its defense against Houthi rebel attacks, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting announced. RAF Typhoons will conduct defensive missions to safeguard Saudi cities and vital infrastructure from the Iranian-backed militant group's strikes. The UK will also provide military advisers and an Atlas A400M transport aircraft to assist in equipment movement.
Streeting emphasized that the Houthis' attacks, such as the assault on Riyadh's airport, demonstrate their determination to escalate the regional situation. He approved additional UK military support, including RAF Typhoons to protect Saudi airspace from drones and missiles, building upon existing UK personnel and equipment. Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently authorized defensive air-to-air refueling for Saudi jets.
The Houthis have gained control over the Bab al-Mandab strait, a critical Red Sea passage for European traffic via the Suez Canal. Despite Saudi Arabia's counterattacks, the Yemeni group continues to launch missiles at the oil-rich kingdom.
