The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has issued a crucial message to Ghanaian citizens regarding car ownership. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Director of Education, Research and Training, ACP Alex Obeng, emphasized that selling a vehicle entails more than just receiving money. He explained that the genuine owner must complete the transfer of ownership within two weeks of selling the car.
According to ACP Obeng, the seller must visit the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and update the vehicle register, removing their name and adding the new owner's name. Failure to do so renders the sale incomplete, the officer warned.
Furthermore, ACP Obeng issued a stern warning about vehicles without number plates. He stated that cars without number plates will no longer be tolerated. He went on to say that possessing an unregistered vehicle that is being driven is illegal. Should someone need to transport an unregistered vehicle, they must obtain a trade license plate, he stressed.
This measure was implemented to ensure traceability in case of any incidents involving the vehicle. Lastly, owners of pre-2023 vehicles were informed that they must pay GH₵25 to digitize their registration records, as mandated by the new registration system.
