Ngumoha comes of age on breathless Anfield night

Eighteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha etched his name into Liverpool's history as the club's youngest player to provide an assist in the Champions League. The young talent's performance in a dramatic 4-3 victory over Villarreal on Tuesday night at Anfield suggested he had arrived. After trailing by two goals, Ngumoha stepped up, creating two goals and helping Liverpool stage a remarkable comeback.

Expressing his satisfaction, Ngumoha said, "As I get older now, affecting games is really important. Today, to get two assists and help the team get the three points, there's nothing more I can ask for."

The 18-year-old's first intervention came just before halftime, when he expertly delivered a pass for Ronald Araujo to level the score. After the break, Ngumoha showcased his maturity, taking on Sergi Cardona and seamlessly delivering the ball to Mac Allister for the opening goal. Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge praised Ngumoha's talent on Amazon Prime's broadcast, noting, "What he does with the ball at his feet, it is God-given ability."

Florian Wirtz sealed the win with a fourth goal, making it a remarkable three wins from three in European competition for Liverpool. Ngumoha had already made history with the club, becoming the youngest Premier League scorer at Anfield in April at just 17. The young star had also been Liverpool's youngest scorer, netting a goal against Newcastle in August 2025 when he was 16.

Despite the chaotic seven-goal contest, supporters celebrated Ngumoha's achievement as the final whistle blew, the stadium blasting "Rio" by Duran Duran.
