NAFDAC uncovers N500m suspected Abia fake alcohol factory

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria has uncovered a suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks production facility in Aba, Abia State, valued at over N500m. The operation, which took place at No. 25 Omenazu Street, revealed unhygienic conditions, counterfeit packaging materials, ethanol, and unidentified liquid mixtures.

The suspected operator fled upon the arrival of NAFDAC officials, leaving behind a vehicle containing packaging materials with the names of Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky. NAFDAC recovered sealing machines, bottle caps, cartons, tanks, and dirty sieves, along with plastic buckets and a 200-litre drum containing ethanol and tree bark immersed in ethanol.

The agency estimated the value of the recovered equipment, materials, and components at over N500m, raising concerns about potential health risks associated with the allegedly unhygienic production process. NAFDAC urged the public to report any suspected illegal manufacturing activities through its call center numbers and email address.
