The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, often referred to as Mahama Cares, is a program aimed at providing assistance to patients suffering from chronic and life-threatening non-communicable diseases, as well as strengthening specialized healthcare delivery across Ghana. Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, who oversees the initiative, clarified the project's purpose during a recent meeting at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho.

The Fund's creation stems from the financial strain families endure when faced with severe illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease, cardiovascular conditions, stroke, and diabetes complications. Mrs. Darko-Opoku explained that the diagnosis of these illnesses can force families to exhaust their savings, sell assets, borrow money, or interrupt their children's education, while relatives may need to leave their jobs to care for the sick.

Consequently, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund has been tasked with establishing an institution that supports eligible patients needing specialized treatment for chronic non-communicable diseases, while also contributing to the improvement of the healthcare system. During a nationwide needs assessment, the Fund's team visited teaching, regional, and major referral hospitals to identify gaps in equipment, infrastructure, and specialist capacity.

Mrs. Darko-Opoku emphasized that financial aid alone cannot resolve the challenges patients face; they may receive treatment support but still encounter difficulties if necessary diagnostic services, equipment, or specialist personnel are not available. The Fund operates on four key pillars: financial support for eligible patients, provision of medical equipment and infrastructure, specialist training and human capacity development, and research and innovation to enhance healthcare outcomes.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund has already initiated a pilot program involving 50 patients nationwide and has been working with specialists and partner institutions on medicine and treatment tariffs. Both the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Professor Lydia Aziato, have stressed the importance of early detection and affordable treatment, especially for cancer patients, and expressed appreciation for the Government's introduction of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
