The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) aims to eliminate the export of raw minerals from Ghana by 2030, in a bid to maximize value from the country's gold resources through local refining and processing. CEO Sammy Gyamfi announced that GoldBod has established refining service agreements with two privately-owned local refineries, Gold Coast Refinery and Royal Ghana Gold Refinery.

As of October 20, these two facilities had processed 25 tonnes of artisanal and small-scale (ASM) gold purchased and exported by GoldBod, accounting for approximately 30% of the 85.4 tonnes exported during that period. Speaking at the African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion 2026, Gyamfi highlighted that local refining has experienced a significant surge since August.

He disclosed that 18.7 tonnes of ASM gold were refined locally since August 1, and 5.4 tonnes of the 5.7 tonnes purchased by GoldBod in October had also undergone local refining. According to Gyamfi, under the leadership of President John Mahama, GoldBod is rapidly transforming Ghana's narrative of exporting 100% raw minerals by the end of 2024 to achieving zero raw mineral export by the end of 2030.

The two refineries are working towards obtaining accreditation from the London Bullion Market Association within three to five years, with regulatory support from GoldBod.
