Denzel Washington, Christopher McQuarrie Team for Original Thriller at Amazon MGM, United Artists

Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists have secured the rights to an untitled thriller, to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington. The film is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. The screenplay, penned by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, revolves around a former police detective serving a life sentence who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Upon being granted compassionate release with six months to live, he returns to his estranged daughter and a grandson he never knew existed, seeking redemption and a fresh start. However, his past proves relentless in its pursuit.

McQuarrie will serve as producer alongside his wife Heather McQuarrie, alongside United Artists co-producers Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, while Joseph Restaino of Hungry Bull Productions, Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem of Mainstay Entertainment, and Katia Washington and Tommy Harper are also on board. Additional executive producers include Tony Stopperan of Hungry Bull Productions, Tim Honigman of Mainstay Entertainment, and Joe Guest.

His upcoming projects include the Netflix film "The Take" (formerly titled "Here Comes the Flood"), where he will star alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Washington is represented by WME, while McQuarrie is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker, and Barkan and Zehentner are represented by Mainstay Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.
