Christina Applegate says she was misdiagnosed and does not have MS

Actress Christina Applegate recently revealed that she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021. The Emmy Award-winning star shared her experience on an episode of her podcast, MeSsy, alongside co-host Jamie Lynn Sigler, who also has MS. Applegate's diagnosis came after experiencing numbness in her toes, which spread to both legs and was accompanied by severe pain.

After undergoing numerous tests, her doctor found nearly 40 lesions on her brain and diagnosed her with MS. However, five years later, after reviewing her brain scans with a new technology, her doctor informed her that she does not have MS. Experts say that diagnosing MS is akin to piecing together a puzzle, as there is no single diagnostic test.

Symptoms of MS can overlap with other conditions, such as neuromyelitis optica, which must be ruled out before a definitive diagnosis can be made. Recent estimates suggest that around 15% of MS cases across various studies are misdiagnosed. The accuracy of diagnoses can vary depending on the patient population and clinical setting.

However, diagnostic tools are improving, and the International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in Multiple Sclerosis has updated its guidelines to incorporate recent advancements like identifying specific brain scan markers. While misdiagnoses are not entirely preventable, ensuring accurate diagnoses is crucial, as it can impact treatment decisions and outcomes.
