The Golden State Valkyries have reached the WNBA Finals after winning Game 1 against the Atlanta Dream with a score of 68-64. The team, which is in its second year of existence, needs to win three more games to secure their first championship. The championship run has been aided by the impressive performance of star guard Gabby Williams, who scored a game-high 26 points on 8-22 shooting from the field in the first game.
Williams' signing this past offseason has elevated a middling playoff team to a full-blown title contender. Kelsey Plum, who has seen Williams as a highly impactful player for years, expressed her excitement about Williams' breakout performance in Game 1, calling her "an extremely smart, competitive, play both sides of the ball, winning basketball player."
