Trump accuses Zelensky of not wanting to end war as Ukraine strikes Russian energy sites

On October 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a conversation with top US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to attempt to de-escalate tensions amid the ongoing war with Russia. During this meeting, Zelensky discussed the recent escalation in which both nations targeted each other's energy infrastructure, causing thousands of Russians to lose power while Kyiv conducted its largest drone assault on Saint Petersburg since the 2022 war began.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump, in an attempt to further complicate the situation, accused Zelensky of not wishing to end the war, stating that Europe's generous financial support did not compel Zelenskyy to seek peace. Trump had claimed that "Zelenskyy doesn’t care, and frankly, with all of the money that Europe is famously giving him... [he doesn’t want to end this war, and probably never did]."

Furthermore, he alleged that Zelensky was deliberately targeting Russian diesel refineries, thus causing global diesel market disruptions, including in the United States.

As the conflict persisted, Ukraine revealed their intention to continue delivering US Patriot air defense systems to strengthen their defense against Russian missile attacks. Zelensky had expressed gratitude for the resumption of intelligence sharing with the US, which had previously left his nation exposed to Russian missile strikes.

As tensions escalated, Russia reportedly proposed a meeting with Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping regarding Ukraine but excluded Zelensky. This revelation, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, heightened concerns in both Kyiv and Europe that the United States might be favoring Russia over Ukraine.
