Govt websites still getting hijacked by online casinos

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed that the Malaysian government plans to investigate the possibility of extending electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verification and age verification to online gaming platforms like Roblox. The aim of this expansion is to address concerns surrounding underage users and the potential misuse of these platforms by extremist, radical, and terrorist groups.

Fahmi mentioned that Roblox has shown its readiness to cooperate in this process, primarily focusing on user and age verification. The government, including the National Security Council, continuously monitors platforms that may be exploited by these groups, and authorities such as the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will take necessary actions if required.

During his upcoming visit to Indonesia, Fahmi will discuss the implementation of age restriction measures for social media users. He plans to meet with his Indonesian counterpart during the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) 2026, which he will attend in Bali and Jakarta. Both countries share similarities and differences in their regulatory frameworks, and discussions will cover the challenges faced by social media platform service providers.

Fahmi also mentioned the importance of addressing Malaysia's aspiration to showcase local intellectual property (IP) to the Indonesian public. The two countries share streaming platforms like Viu, which broadcast Malaysian works to Indonesian communities. Consequently, both sides will explore ways to strengthen ties between Malaysia's and Indonesia's cinema networks, as well as collaborate on producing and broadcasting online content.
