Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has announced that ticket sales for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) service are set to commence in mid-November, with passenger operations from Gombak to Kota Bharu commencing on 12 December 2026. The service, which will connect Selangor and Kelantan, is scheduled to begin operations next month, subject to safety requirements and regulatory approval.
ECRL will feature three seating classes: economy, premium economy, and business, accommodating varying passenger needs. The service will also comprise two types of trains: transit trains stopping at all scheduled stations and express trains stopping only at four major stations – Gombak, KotaSAS in Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu, and Kota Bharu.
Two-way fares for the 209km Gombak-KotaSAS route will start at RM60 for transit services and RM68 for express services. For the 378km Gombak-Kuala Terengganu route, transit fares will begin at RM95, with express train fares starting at RM110. These prices apply to both directions.
MRL CEO Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak revealed that the Cabinet approved a dynamic fare mechanism on 16 October 2026, which will factor in travel time, demand, and seat availability. Safeguards will be in place to prevent excessive fare hikes. Additional fare discounts include 50% off for children aged two to 12, Malaysian senior citizens aged 60 and above, cardholders with disabilities, and government pensioners. Students aged 13 to 24 will receive a 40% discount.
Construction progress, as of October 2026, stands at 98.16%, with site acceptance and system integration tests fully completed. Train testing began on 25 August 2026, covering over 50,000km, with fault-free running tests scheduled for 23 October 2026, and trial operations expected in November.
