Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, arrived in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on October 17, 2026, as the military intensifies efforts to rescue Nigerians held captive across the country. This move followed President Bola Tinubu's directive to security agencies to enhance operations and ensure the safe return of all abducted individuals in the nation.

The President's call for decisive action against terrorists and bandits came after a security meeting chaired by Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on October 15, 2026. The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, revealed this presidential directive, emphasizing that the President expects security chiefs to dismantle every terrorist and bandit camp in Nigeria.

Tinubu also instructed service chiefs and other heads of security agencies to maintain high levels of security during the upcoming elections slated for January, stressing the importance of safeguarding voters and creating a secure environment for the electoral process.
