North Korea says tested AI-assisted torpedo system

North Korea has announced the successful testing of a new AI-assisted torpedo system, according to state media. The super-speed Zam-2.0 torpedo system, capable of precise guidance through artificial intelligence, was tested underwater on Thursday to confirm successful technical updates. This development follows weeks of tension between North Korea and South Korea, which escalated after Pyongyang test-fired two types of cruise missiles from a submarine.

Analysts suggest that North Korea may be rapidly advancing its missile and weapons technology with Russian support in exchange for sending troops to Ukraine. The AI technology applied to the torpedo allows for improved target detection and guidance, potentially enabling the weapon to evade decoys and carry out autonomous decisions.

South Korea and the United States have deployed decoy targets to counter torpedoes, but North Korea's AI-assisted system could increase the difficulty of defending against its underwater threats. The announcement comes amid rising speculation about a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as both countries prepare for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November.

North Korea's focus on AI-assisted weapons may be an attempt to portray itself as more advanced than South Korea, which has also been developing hypersonic missile technology. However, North Korea may need more time to perfect the stealth and noise reduction aspects of its torpedo system.
