Mumbai Cyber Fraud: 67-Year-Old Woman Duped Of ₹61 Lakh By Fake NIA Officer; FIR Registered

A 67-year-old woman in Mumbai was allegedly defrauded of Rs 61 lakh by a cybercriminal who impersonated a National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer. The incident was reported to the Khar police, who have registered an FIR.

The victim, a retired woman from Kolkata, had two children living in Bandra West. On October 1, she received a WhatsApp call from a man who claimed to be a Deputy Inspector General of the NIA, based in Colaba. He falsely claimed that a bank account held by her in Canara Bank was being used to fund terrorists, and threatened that an arrest warrant had been issued against her.

Despite denying any links to terrorist organisations, the woman was persuaded by the caller's knowledge of her Aadhaar number and a fabricated video showing police beating four individuals associated with terrorists. She was then instructed to transfer Rs 25 lakh, which she did. The fraudster demanded more money, and the woman transferred an additional Rs 7 lakh to two accounts provided by the scammer. She eventually mortgaged her gold jewellery and transferred the remaining amount to the fraudster's accounts.
