Selangor Islamic Affairs Council (Mais) has denied allegations that the apprehension of former MP Setiawangsa Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad is an act of harassment or trap by the Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) last Thursday. Salehuddin Saidin, the chairman, emphasized that the authority acted strictly based on the official complaint received, in accordance with the established law without manipulating circumstances to impose any party.

Claiming that the religious department was involved in manipulation and the like is entirely false, he added. They also have a responsibility based on the law when a complaint is made, and we must conduct a thorough investigation. Therefore, trust Jais to conduct the investigation as soon as possible, and if clear evidence is found, we will file a case in court, he said when addressing the Selangor Assembly of the Holders of the National Tal'iha Lecture 2026.

In explaining the clarification statement to the public, Salehuddin stated that the matter was made to provide clarity that Shariah law is implemented fairly regardless of the background or influence of the individual being investigated. Consequently, he urged the public to give sufficient space to Jais to complete the investigative procedure and avoid any baseless speculation that could undermine the fairness of the judicial process.

He reminded that one cannot impose law while the investigation is incomplete; we must act fairly and fulfill our responsibility according to the regulations. Doing so without the regulation and the like will also make us liable, he added. Earlier, Nik Nazmi confirmed in an Instagram post that he was one of the two individuals apprehended by Jais on allegations of illicit intercourse in Petaling Jaya on Thursday and was ready to cooperate in any judicial proceedings.
