Home minister: 24-hour border watch, jetty demolitions to curb cross-border crime in Kelantan

Police are implementing continuous surveillance along all border routes in Kelantan to combat cross-border crime, announced Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The directive was given to Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat to ensure constant physical surveillance. The measures include demolishing unauthorized jetties and prosecuting individuals who cross the border without proper documentation, Saifuddin informed a press conference following the launch of the Home Ministry's 2026 Kampung Angkat Madani and Sekolah Angkat Madani programs.

However, he acknowledged that despite these efforts, cross-border crime may persist due to the persistence of organized criminal networks. Saifuddin emphasized that curbing such activities necessitates cooperation from all parties and cannot solely rely on the Home Ministry and the police. Regarding the case involving AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, Saifuddin stated that the police are in the process of finalizing investigation papers, which were forwarded to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) following a request for improvements.

The AGC subsequently requested additional aspects of the investigation to ensure the evidence gathered is robust for further consideration. The investigation papers comprise witness statements and data collected throughout the investigation. The AGC may return the papers to the police for further completion if additional information is required before a decision is made.

Previously, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail disclosed that the investigation was being conducted under Section 323 of the Penal Code, concerning voluntarily causing hurt to another person. So far, 25 witness statements have been recorded to aid in the investigation. It was reported that Mohd Shuhaily initially left the matter to the government to decide on potential action following a video showing him reprimanding someone at KLIA Terminal 1.

Mohd Shuhaily expressed readiness to accept any decision regarding the matter, as the issue was brought to the attention of the country’s top leadership and the Home Ministry.
