Etihad and Southwest Airlines to let passengers earn and redeem miles from 2027

Southwest Airlines is set to introduce unlimited Companion Pass trips as part of a major loyalty program overhaul. The airline unveiled the changes during a press event in Texas on Thursday. The new Platinum loyalty tier will grant customers unlimited Companion Passes, allowing them to bring a friend or family member on their flights at no extra cost.

The unlimited perk will not be limited to Platinum flyers, as the airline is introducing Milestone Rewards that will enable customers to unlock up to three Companion Pass trips while working towards Platinum status. These changes are part of Southwest's broader strategy to compete with industry giants such as United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines.

The revamped loyalty program includes three elite status levels: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The airline's existing A-List status will become Silver, while A-List Preferred will transition to Gold, with Platinum sitting above both tiers and offering unlimited Companion Pass trips. While Platinum customers can enjoy unlimited Companion Pass trips, those who haven't reached Platinum can still earn up to three passes through Milestone Rewards as they progress through the loyalty tiers.

Southwest's decision to offer unlimited Companion Pass trips is notable, as most U.S. airlines typically impose restrictions on companion-ticket benefits, often requiring premium credit cards. For instance, Delta Air Lines provides a one-time Companion Certificate to eligible Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Reserve American Express cardholders, which can be used for a single qualifying round-trip companion ticket.
