Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was seen in tears following a harrowing collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Saturday's match. After leaving the field on a stretcher with his hands clasped together, Martinez appeared to be in significant distress. The accident unfolded when Martinez ventured off his line to block a free kick from Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, inadvertently colliding with Branthwaite before hitting the ground.
The force of the impact seemed to involve Martinez's head, triggering an involuntary reaction known as a fencing response. Medical personnel quickly enveloped the goalkeeper, and play was halted for their evaluation. Martinez's condition warranted a trip to a nearby hospital for further examination, leading to his replacement by Mike Penders.
The emotional image of the goalkeeper in tears and clasping his hands together underscored the gravity of the situation.
