Platform workers should not be penalised for delays during haze: Jasmin Lau
Under the Platform Workers Act, platform operators have workplace safety and health responsibilities towards their workers, said the Acting Minister for Manpower.
Acting Minister for Manpower Jasmin Lau stated that platform workers should not face penalties for delays during the haze. She emphasized that this includes penalties imposed by incentive schemes, reduced job allocations, or pay deductions. Platform operators are required to protect workers from health risks associated with haze, as per the Platform Workers Act.
Ms Lau highlighted that some platform operators, such as Grab and foodpanda, have partnered with the National Delivery Champions Association to distribute N95 masks to workers, to which she expressed her appreciation. About a quarter of the 400 worksite inspections conducted by the Ministry of Manpower in September found gaps in haze management plans.
Employers are expected to take "reasonable and practicable measures" to safeguard their workers, including adhering to haze-related health risks. MOM will provide further guidance on utilizing one-hour PM 2.5 readings to decide on outdoor work activities and necessary safety measures.
