Ogoni cleanup: Reps demand more funds for HYPREP

The House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities has urged for additional funding for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in order to finish outstanding cleanup initiatives in the Ogoni region, located in Rivers State. During a two-day oversight visit to several HYPREP sites, Committee Chair Dumnamene Dekor informed journalists that the project's initial funding has already been utilized, even though its implementation has exceeded expectations.

Dekor emphasized that "the funds are not available," and called on all relevant parties to provide the necessary financial support, noting that the project has surpassed its initial expectations. HYPREP's Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, reported that the agency has established over 120 project sites across various initiatives, such as environmental remediation, shoreline cleanup, water provision, hospital improvement, job creation, and skills training for Ogoni youths and women.
