US man arrested over alleged shooting plot targeting Hindu site

Chicago authorities apprehended Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old resident of Palatine, on Sunday after receiving a tip regarding his alleged white supremacist views and an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship, potentially located in Aurora, approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Palatine.

Detectives conducted a search warrant at Paporakis' residence, discovering a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, and hundreds of additional rounds of rifle ammunition. Among the seized items was a tactical vest adorned with body armor and a patch bearing symbols of white supremacist extremism.

Electronics communications and a document titled "Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter's Manifesto)" were also examined. The document contained statements reflecting white supremacist and extremist ideologies, including references to violence against individuals of South Asian descent, particularly those of Indian origin. Detectives suspect Paporakis was prepared to execute an attack on Sunday, October 11, though the precise location has yet to be determined and is under investigation. The FBI is collaborating with local police in the probe.

Following consultation with prosecutors from the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Paporakis was charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful weapon possession. He made his appearance in court on Wednesday, where a judge ordered his detention. His next court date is scheduled for October 30. Human rights advocates have noted a recent increase in hate crimes against South Asians in the US, attributing it to factors such as escalating anti-immigration rhetoric and policies, as well as the proliferation of white supremacist ideology.
