Meta unveils new AI model Muse Spark Open

Meta has launched Muse Spark Open, a new open-weight AI model that the company claims rivals top Chinese developers and is the most capable U.S. open-weight model to date. According to Slashdot, the model features 816 billion total parameters with 42 billion active parameters and a 1 million-token context window. Meta states the model is designed for software engineering, multi-step reasoning, and extended tasks, specifically excelling at coding and agentic work.

The model is optimized to run locally on Apple's M5 Ultra chips using the MLX framework. Slashdot reports that the model can run across two 512GB Mac Studios, utilizing Apple's unified memory architecture so that two machines behave like a single supercomputer with a terabyte of unified memory. The Verge notes that Meta and Apple collaborated on the launch, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO John Ternus publicly supporting the release on X.
