FBR extends deadline for filing income tax returns to Oct 31

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the 2026 tax year until October 31, 2026. This extension comes in response to requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations who cited delays in issuing return forms and heavy online traffic as obstacles to timely filing. The original deadline was September 30, but it was previously extended to October 15.

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, represented by its president Atif Ikram Sheikh, urged the government to extend the deadline to October 31 to facilitate trade and industry. The Karachi Tax Bar Association also submitted a five-page letter highlighting issues such as delays in issuing draft notifications and technical glitches on the IRIS portal.

As of October 14, a total of 6.71 million returns had been filed, compared to 4.99 million during the same period in the previous year, marking a 45% increase. The total tax paid with returns up to that date amounted to Rs66.81 billion, a 15% increase from the previous year's Rs58.29 billion. Returns filed by non-salaried individuals, including traders, shopkeepers, professionals, and self-employed individuals, rose by 46.35% from 3.038 million to 4.446 million.

Salaried individuals' returns increased by 16.16% to 2.178 million, from 1.875 million the previous year.
