Alexander Volkanovski eyes UFC lightweight title fight against Justin Gaethje

In just under two weeks, UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will step back into the octagon to defend his title against No. 1 contender Movsar Evloev. Set for October 24th, this 145-pound title fight will cap a highly anticipated UFC 333 card. Volkanovski, now in his second reign as champion, aims to secure his seventh title defense.

With a record unbeaten, Evloev has taken down Lerone Murphy, Aljamain Sterling, Arnold Allen, and other formidable opponents. Although his style bears similarities to Islam Makhachev's, Evloev's size advantage won't be an issue for Volkanovski. The win would not only affirm Volkanovski's status as the greatest featherweight but could also propel him toward his goal of becoming a two-weight world champion.

In a recent podcast, Volkanovski expressed his desire for a rematch with lightweight champion Justin Gaethje, seeing it as a superfight that would satisfy fans. While a rematch is unlikely, Volkanovski believes a fight with the upcoming lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje, would be more appealing than a rematch against Arman Tsarukyan.

Gaethje, who has ruled out an immediate rematch with Volkanovski, would likely welcome the superfight opportunity. However, due to Volkanovski's upcoming fight against Evloev, a Volkanovski-Gaethje matchup is highly improbable.
