Syngenta, Kyoyu Agri Co Ltd announces strategic collaboration

Lahore, Pakistan - Syngenta, a global leader in agricultural innovation, and Kyoyu Agri Co Ltd, a prominent Japanese agrochemical manufacturer, have announced a strategic partnership on Tuesday. This collaboration aims to introduce high-performance herbicide solutions to rice markets across Asia. The key ingredient in these solutions is Cyclopyranil, a novel active ingredient developed by Kyoyu Agri.

Cyclopyranil is unique in its mode of action, being a Proto-Porphyrinogen Oxidase (PPO)-inhibitor. As such, it is effective against a broad spectrum of broadleaf and grass weeds, even those resistant to other herbicide modes of action like AC Case and ALS herbicides. The herbicide can be used as a pre- or post-emergent, providing farmers with increased flexibility.

Ioana Tudor, Syngenta's Global Head of Marketing, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in the face of growing herbicide resistance. "As herbicide resistance spreads, the effective toolbox of options available to rice farmers is steadily dwindling," she stated. "At Syngenta, we are committed to reversing this trend by delivering the next generation of innovative solutions."

Masakazu Yamada, President of Kyoyu Agri, echoed this sentiment. "Bringing our proprietary technologies to the global stage is a key milestone for us," he said. "This innovative herbicide, created by Kyoyu Agri, will be widely available across Asia through Syngenta’s robust distribution network. With this advanced solution, we will focus our efforts on helping rice farmers overcome expanding weed resistance, secure their harvests, and reduce the burden in their daily operations."

The collaboration comes at a time when herbicide-resistant weeds are spreading in rice fields worldwide. More than 190 cases of herbicide-resistant weeds in rice production systems have been documented globally. Barnyard grass (Echinocloa crus-galli) is particularly troublesome, competing aggressively with rice for vital resources and nutrients, and often evading early identification and removal efforts.
