Amir congratulates Pope of the Vatican on successful surgery

Vatican City witnessed a wave of prayers and well-wishes on Wednesday as the world learned that Pope Leo, aged 71, had been diagnosed with lung cancer. The news came as a surprise, considering the relatively young and active nature of the pontiff, who was only elected in May 2025. A prayer was recited for Pope Leo's speedy recovery during an open-air Mass in St. Peter’s Square, following his surgery to remove part of his right lung.

The pope, known for his love of sports and generally good health, was diagnosed on Tuesday with lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. Doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung during the 90-minute surgery at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, which proceeded without complications. Further details about the size and potential spread of the tumor were not disclosed.

The Vatican announced that Pope Leo would likely remain hospitalized for around a week, with all public engagements canceled until October 20. Filipino Cardinal Luis Tagle led the Mass in place of the absent pope, marking a significant event in the Church's history as Tagle became the first Asian cardinal to hold this prestigious role.
