The Abia State Government has completed a review of the draft policy framework for implementing the Abia State Senior Citizens Centre Law No. 4 of 2025. The review was finalized during a two-day stakeholders’ validation workshop in Umuahia, which focused on the draft Abia State Policy on Ageing. Organized by the state government alongside the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, the workshop was themed “Stronger Policies, Greater Inclusion, A Brighter Future for Our Senior Citizens.”
Dr. Victor Chima, the Social Policy Officer at the United Nations Children’s Fund Enugu Field Office, stated that the policy on ageing is important because it aligns with the state's social protection agenda. He noted that UNICEF and the International Labour Organisation will provide continuous support to strengthen and implement the state's social protection system.
Additionally, Dr. Otti Nwaka, the facilitator and coordinator of the Abia State Senior Citizens Centre, said the initiative was originated from the National Senior Citizens Centre.
