1 player Commanders must trade before 2026 NFL trade deadline

The Washington Commanders are facing a challenging start in the 2026 NFL season and may need to start considering trades before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Defensive tackle Daron Payne, who has built a strong résumé in his nine seasons with the team, could be a potential trade chip. Payne has recorded over 440 total tackles, 38 sacks, and eight forced fumbles, and he also has an interception from 2020.

He is a key player in Washington's defensive line, known for his ability to stop the run and pressure quarterbacks. However, the decision of whether to keep him for the rest of the season or trade him for future assets is a crucial one. The Commanders still have time to turn things around, but a loss to the San Francisco 49ers could significantly impact their playoff chances.

If Washington continues to struggle, trading Payne could give them a chance to receive compensation and improve their defensive line for the playoffs. Teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, and Atlanta Falcons might be interested in Payne, while teams with strong defenses such as the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers could also be in the mix.

However, retaining Payne's experience and production could be valuable if the organization believes they can get back on track. The deadline offers the Commanders a chance to turn Payne's expiring contract into assets, but they should explore the trade market before it passes.
