UK Arrests Over 17,000 Illegal Workers in Major Crackdown

The United Kingdom has made over 17,000 arrests for illegal working since July 2024, as immigration authorities ramp up enforcement against unlawful employment across the country, according to the Home Office. The number of arrests has more than doubled compared to the previous two years, with a 122% increase reported in August 2024 alone.

In the first half of 2026, immigration raids surged by 31% to 7,270, leading to 4,756 arrests, a 20% rise from the same period in 2025. London witnessed the most arrests, totaling 1,256, followed by the West Midlands with 701 and South West England with 693.

The beauty, retail, and hospitality sectors faced a substantial £74 million in civil penalties for violations related to illegal employment during 2026. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood declared the enforcement activity as the highest in British history and pledged continued action against illegal workers and employers breaching immigration laws.

Under UK law, businesses are obligated to confirm their employees' legal right to work in the country. Employers who fail to adhere to this can face both financial penalties and criminal prosecution.
