Star Oil donates GH¢1million towards construction of new CID facility

Oil marketing firm Star Oil has contributed GH¢1 million to aid in the construction of a new facility for the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Ghana Police Service. The new facility, anticipated to cost GH¢11 million, aims to enhance the CID's investigative and operational capabilities upon completion. The project will encompass office spaces, interrogation rooms, and detention facilities for the department.

Star Oil's Chief Executive Officer, Philip Tieku, expressed the donation as a recognition of the CID's role in addressing security challenges that impact the company's operations nationwide. He highlighted how the department's work has contributed to Star Oil's security monitoring efforts at its over 280 locations across the country, reducing the need for physical security personnel at certain lower-risk sites.

"The CID has been very supportive in that effort," Tieku stated. He added that the company deemed it crucial to support the department's infrastructure given the benefits they have reaped from its services. Director-General of CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, welcomed the donation, noting that the new facility would resolve longstanding issues with insufficient detention space at the department's headquarters.

Currently, the department is forced to send arrested persons to other police stations for detention and interrogation, straining those facilities. "For a while now, we’ve not had that facility within this headquarters, and it is also a matter of concern for us," Donkor remarked. Construction contractor David Mawuli of Delta Plus confirmed the project will consist of eight detention cells for male and female suspects, along with separate cells for juveniles.

The building will also house interrogation rooms, investigation offices, IT facilities, and a cafeteria on the top floor. Completion is projected within 12 months, assuming the necessary resources are provided.
