Porta a porta, 9 lavoratori su 10 lo scelgono per la flessibilità

The transformation of digital technology has profoundly altered the work of those involved in door-to-door sales, creating a new profile for sellers. This category, numbering approximately 100,000 employees in our country, is largely made up of women, around 90%. Almost three-quarters of these workers take on this profession to supplement their income, while only a quarter consider it their main occupation.

The majority of these workers are women, and most use digital tools daily or regularly to support their work, with a preference for smartphones and company-provided apps over other devices like PCs or tablets.

The primary reason for their appreciation is the growing emphasis on work-life balance and earnings, as highlighted in numerous studies. According to the first Univendita-Confcommercio observatory, conducted on a sample of about 8,500 workers, work-life balance is a decisive factor, as is the autonomy to manage one's time. Eighty-six point five percent of workers prefer the flexibility to schedule their work at their own pace, while eighty-four point six percent value the economic emancipation.

Seventy-three point two percent are satisfied with their earnings compared to the work they do, and this percentage rises to seventy-three point two percent among those under 25. This contradicts the stereotype of the transient profession, with seventy point five percent working in this field for at least four years and fifty-three point eight percent for at least seven years. The latter figure exceeds seventy percent for those over 55.

The fact that nine out of ten are women makes it easier to discuss the issue of gender equality, as 72.6% of the sample says equal earning opportunities exist for both genders. Marta Gamba, general secretary of Univendita, interprets these data by saying, "direct selling is an ethical and meritocratic sector, conducive to those who desire responsible autonomy in work, who seek flexibility, career opportunities, and earnings commensurate with merit.

At the same time, women, who represent the vast majority of workers, appreciate economic gender equality, organizational flexibility that allows for a work-life balance, and relational creative creativity."

The inclination of companies in the sector to provide extensive, free training to 360 degrees attracts many young people under 25, who value opportunities for personal and professional growth, especially the acquisition of relational soft skills. This is the primary motivation for them to join this profession, according to over four out of ten.

Eighty-six point two percent of the sample feel valued, 91% say they are satisfied, and nearly sixty-one percent would recommend this work to others. Among the training topics, those related to products and sales techniques prevail, but also training on communication, public speaking, and relational soft skills, demonstrating that the direct and personal relationship between customer and seller remains a crucial factor.

Eighty-three point seven percent of workers say they often create a trust relationship with the customer, 81.9% declare that the consumer appreciates the direct and personal relationship, and 79.9% say they maintain relationships with customers beyond the sale, showing the pleasure of a long-term relationship in an era where e-commerce tends to depersonalize the purchasing experience.

The theme of trust is so strong that eighty-four point five percent of respondents feel like a reference point for their customers.
