Niko Kovač extends contract as Borussia Dortmund coach to 2029

Borussia Dortmund has extended the contract of coach Niko Kovač until June 2029, in recognition of his role in stabilizing the team. The German club announced the deal before a Champions League match against Bodø/Glimt, highlighting Kovač's success since he took over in January 2025. Kovač guided Dortmund from 11th place in the Bundesliga to a fourth-place finish, securing a Champions League qualification spot.

The following season, he led the team to second place. In his current campaign, Kovač has started strong, securing four wins from five Bundesliga games so far. Borussia Dortmund's managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, praised Kovač's consistent development of the team and the acceptance he enjoys within the club. The extension also applies to Kovač's brother Robert Kovač and fellow assistant Filip Tapalović.

Dortmund highlighted Kovač's strong record in the Bundesliga, with his team averaging 2.15 points per game, the best record under any coach. The club's sports director, Ole Book, expressed a close and trusting working relationship with Kovač, stating that they frequently communicate and work towards future success. Kovač previously achieved significant success at Eintracht Frankfurt, leading them to a German Cup final win over Bayern Munich in 2018 and a league and cup double the next season. He also had spells in charge of Monaco and Wolfsburg.
