Nigeria's telecom watchdog, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has registered around 231 million telecommunications devices in the country as it introduces a new verification system to block counterfeit, cloned and unauthorized phones from mobile networks. The system aims to enhance consumer protection, enhance network quality and enable regulators to track imported devices.
NCC Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, Edoyemi Ogoh, revealed this during a media briefing in Abuja. Existing subscribers do not need to take any action as the commission has automatically captured their devices, while new devices must meet verification requirements before accessing networks. The commission is partnering with the Nigeria Customs Service, manufacturers, importers, and dealers to ensure imported devices are authenticated.
The verification system follows the implementation of Type Approval Business Rules and consultations with industry stakeholders. Consumers can verify devices by dialing *315# or visiting the NCC's Device Checker portal, while those with unverified devices should contact sellers for replacements or report concerns via the commission's toll-free 315 helpline.
