How to turn WhatsApp groups into the ultimate personal note-taking tool
Recently IOL Tech editor Michael Sherman decided to see how using single-member WhatsApp groups can revolutionise your note-taking by organising ideas into dedicated topics across any operating system.
There are many effective note-taking apps available for various operating systems. Instead of downloading a new app and learning its interface, you can utilize WhatsApp as a versatile productivity tool. I have recently found particular value in using WhatsApp's group chat feature as a personal note-taking dashboard. Creating a custom group tailored to your specific needs, without having to invite or retain other members, is straightforward.
What sets this approach apart from regular self-messaging is the ability to label each group by topic or category. For instance, I established a group solely dedicated to ideas for technology articles. Whenever a new concept crosses my mind or I come across an intriguing post on social media, I can immediately add it to that group, allowing me to review it conveniently the following day when compiling content.
If I were to message myself in a single chat, those important work ideas would likely get lost among everyday personal links, such as amusing Instagram or Facebook Reels that I save to show my wife later. Grouping your thoughts into topic-based categories helps keep work projects separate from personal conversations. Although most smartphones come with a default notes app pre-installed, WhatsApp offers a distinct advantage if you use multiple ecosystems, such as pairing an Android phone with a Mac or relying on a Huawei device.
WhatsApp seamlessly connects different platforms, making your saved notes readily accessible on both mobile and desktop screens. If your technology devices span multiple ecosystems, this simple technique can be a game-changer.
